Bombardier has issued SB 604-52-007 for Challenger CL-600-2B16 models to address corrosion in the "lower structural elements of the passenger door". Bombardier states that purpose of this Service Bulletin, which effects serial numbers 5301 to 5665, is to remove the epoxy ramp and repair corrosion. The epoxy ramp around the MED, which has been found to deteriorate over time, can allow for moisture to enter which can lead to corrosion damage. Additional modifications include adding draining holes to allow access to facilitate scheduled inspections. On this particular door, corrosion was identified on the MED hinge, the forward and aft lower corners, the lower center channel and hinge fairings.

The epoxy ramp was removed as per the instructions to further assess the state of the corrosion damage and begin repairs. The deterioration of this epoxy is likely the source of the trapped moisture which contributed to the spread of the corrosion. Corrosion thrives under humid environments where deterioration of metal can occur relatively quickly. One of the best ways to prevent corrosion damage is to ensure the area in question is protected from moisture as much as possible. Sealant was added in select areas to further protect the area from moisture.

Permaswaging is a specialized technique that is used in the aviation industry that involves making permanent repairs to hydraulic, water and fuel lines. But what exactly is Permaswaging? Pronounced "swedge", Permaswaging is a cold-working technique that involves using specialized dies to form one piece of metal around another. In aviation, Permaswaging (sometimes referred to as swaging) is mostly used in fluid systems where a permanent joint with metal to metal sealing is required. Permaswaging results in a mechanical connection between the tubing and fitting that will act as a permanent container for fluid such as hydraulic fluid. Permaswaging aims to produce a uniform reduction of a tube to fitting connection to tolerances that would not require welding or other sealing.

For a great example of how this flexibility benefits our customers, SEAL Aviation was called out to the customer's location in to assist the customer with Bombardier Service Bulletin 600-0764. This Service Bulletin details relocating the hydraulic system which requires swaging of new hydraulic lines. Bombardier has issued this AD to "address the failure of one of the brake accumulator screw caps/end caps, which could result in impact damage causing loss of both hydraulic systems No. 2 and No. 3, and the consequent loss of both braking and nose wheel steering, the potential for a runway excursion, and damage to the airplane." Having the tooling on-hand combined with our mobile capabilities made SEAL Aviation the perfect fit to assist with fabricating new hydraulic lines and relocating the hydraulic system. SEAL Aviation was called offsite to the customer's location to assist with the removal of a Citation 560 Ultra wing bolt for a Phase 14 inspection. Other maintenance companies tried to assist with the removal of this bolt and failed. The customer reached out to SEAL Aviation due to our reputation for taking on advanced tasks that other aircraft repair stations cannot accomplish. Naturally, the technicians in the SEAL Aviation Structural Team were up to taking on this difficult repair.

Once on-site, it was determined by SEAL Aviation Structural Repair Technicians that the stubborn wing attach bolts would need to be reamed with specialized tooling to be removed. This is accomplished by custom machining a fixture that can be fastened to the ribs of the airframe. Once this custom fixture is in place, the wing attach bolt could be reamed safely.

The wing attach bolt on this Citation was stubborn but after a few attempts, the bolt was free and the customer could continue with their Phase 41 inspection. Gulfstream G280 owners with serial numbers 2001-2189 will be required to comply with Service Bulletin 280-57-277 "Cold Working of Holes in Lower Skin Stringer 3 Common to Outboard Feed Tank Lower Bracket". This Service Bulletin calls for an inspection of the stringer around the three fastener holes and the stringer at the lower outboard end of the feeder tank for cracks. If no cracks are found, cold work is to be performed on the holes.

This Service Bulletin has been issued in response to Gulfstream discovering 'the design was found to be insufficiently fatigue resistant, concentrated around three holes'. It is recommended that this task be accomplished concurrently with SB 280-57-182 "Wings - Enlarging Corner Holes on Feed Tank Bracket".

Service Bulletin 200-57-426 Wing Flaps Fairing Seal Repair addresses flap fairing debonding and moisture intrusion that might lead to lower wing skin corrosion, cracking on both wings and reduced structural integrity of the wings. This Service Bulletin requires G200 aircraft to have corrosion removed on certain areas of the lower skin on both wings. Once the corrosion has been removed, the fairings are then resealed with fillet sealant and the area is then inspected by a Non-destructive Testing Technician.
